Masters of Horror

Haven't updated my personal introduction to scary movies for a long time. Man are very strange animals, they can play tennis more than two hours every afternoon, and watch some kind of korea soap opras every evening, and still say out loud:" I am too busy to update my blogs. "

Any way, get back to the point, I've just got some idea that maybe the scary movies I introduced on this BLOG before are little bit out of date. I mean they are classic ones without doubt, but they are kind of old, out fashioned, such as many movie works of Hitchcock's. What I really wanted to do is not just to introduce some old classic ones, which are already very known to people. It is introducing someone who fancies scary movies to new masterpieces that I really want. So, I've decided that from today on I'll talk about scary movies which are filmed recently. I can't promise they are the newest, but at least after 2000, I guess.

Today, I'll introduce you to "Masters of Horror".  It is not A movie; it is a serial of movies. By the time I write this article, two seasons have been released by SHOWTIME channel. It is really a showtime! The world's top great directors of horror movies, such as David Fischer, Tobe Hooper, Dario Argento, etc. have been gathered to film scary stories respectivetly which are all thumping good ones, full of imagination and true stroke of inspirations.

Every story of "Masters of Horror" lasts about an hour. Though basically they are all scary movies, some are about love, some about science fiction, some about war, some even about fairy tales. The second episode of the first season is my personal favourite story. It is about a student of physics, who lived in a rented house and met a woman with a baby who lived in the next door. Somehow he found that the shape of the walls of his room is very similar to parallel universes according to the theory he had been studying in. Then during the night he falling asleep he found himself came into another space, and there was an evil witch and a man-faced mouse who was trying to kill the baby in the next door. By the time he woke up, he was confused, didn't know if it was just a dream or not, because the dream was so real and something that was prefigured in the dream started to happen in reality...

Since I used to be a student of physices myself, that story gave me some real feelings like I was inside it. Other stories are also very creative and thrilling, while I don't have much time to introduce them one by one. You could try to watch them yourselves. I am sure they won't disappoint you.

About Scary Movie

    English:
My ex-roomie used to tell me that there are several essential elements in a successful horror movie: loneliness, darkness, death. Basically I agree with that. Loneliness gives you some feelings that you have no one else but yourself to cout on. Humans are group living animals, so we need each other, we need contacts, we need communications. Even though we sometimes hurt each other without mercy, but when we are in some extreme dangerous situation, the first thing we need is a companion, a warm hand. Darkness can raise human's inborn horrors, because darkness indicates something intangible, something unkown. Some deadly things hidden in the shallow of darkness, much more powerful than human beings, at the samethime you don't even kown what the hell it is, those can drive people crazy. Death, I can assert that most people in this world including me are afraid of that, especially elder ones. Fundamentally death is still something unkown. Where are we after we die? Can we still feel or touch? Or are there still "we"? Bibble says we still have spirits after we die, while Buddha doctrine says almost the same thing. But modern science says those are all craps, people are left nothing but corpses after they die. We are always willing to flaunt our esteem for science, but ironically even great scientists themselves don't know which to believe. So we have to admit that death is still a myth to everybody, because no living people could've been through it.
Admittedly, loneliness, darkness, death are really very important to a good scary moive, but  in my opinin there is one thing that more fundamental: illusion, namely something that in one's head. Why we see a mirror in nearly every scary movie? Because mirror is a reflection of the real world, inside it, we can see horrible illusions behind our back. Why ghost or some psychiatric lunatics are always the scary movie director's favourit subjects? Because they are illusions again. In science's point of view, ghost itself is a creation from one's imagination. Most lunatics in scary movie always have multiple characters and most of them will meet other figures which only exist in their mind. Further more, loneliness, darkness, death, all can be included in the realm of illusion. Loneliness is a precondition of an illusion, because with more people, the chance of creating a illusion is more minuscule. You can hardly imagine that three or more people have their metal health problem at the same time! And darkness, darkness obviously gives people more room to imagine a illusion. Finally death, as I already said, death itself is something unkown just like some deadly overwhelmingly powerful illusion which can endanger your life any minute and you can never escape.
So you see what the most basic factor of scary movie is? Illusion, which you cannot see in everyday life, so it can raise your feeling of horror. And sometimes, there are not just illusions of vision but some illusions of hearing, like woman's cry at the midnight or noises from the next door, you name it.
According to this theory, you can easily tell the difference between American-Europe scary movies and Japanese-Korea scary movies. Both of them are all stories about illusions, but the illusions in the former ones' storys are always given an explanation at the end. I don't know whether this has something to do with Occidentals more admire science or what, but American-Europe scary movies do prefer give an reasonable explanation to the whole story, while Japanese-Korea scary movies rarely have explanations about the story they tell. An evil ghost is still an evil ghost, you can never figure it out. Personally I prefer a reasonable story, because that makes sense to me. While some people consider that a reasonable story is less scary than a pure ghost story, because for the latter you can never figure out the source where the horror comes from. There is anther difference between American-Europe scary movies and Japanese-Korea scary movies. The former ones emphasize the visual effect more, while the latter ones pay more attension to the atmosphere of the whole movie.
OK, maybe I'd better finish this article as quickly as possible, because it is nearly 3:00 AM now and it seems that I still have some translation jobs to do. I just hope the night elf wouldn't suddenly poke me with his sharp fingers from behind my back. OK, I was just kidding o(∩_∩)o...

    English:
"Seven Sins" is not exactly a scary movie. Maybe I should change the tag a little, "scary suspense moive" more accurate. Gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, pride, lust, and envy, these are seven deadly sins in Catholicism. And a serial killer who named himself John Doe, kills those people who had commited these sins one by one, and he thinks of himself as preaching. This film won widely applauses not only because of its great suspense, but because it rises everybody's deep thoughts. I want to quote John Doe's line in the movie to shed a little light on what this movie is about.
"Innocent? Is that supposed to be funny? An obese man? A disgusting man who can't barely stand up. A man if you saw him on a street you point out to your friends that they can join you and mocking him? A man if you saw him while you were eating you wouldn't be able to finish your meal. And after him, I picked the lawyer and you both must secretively thank me for that one. This is the man who dedicated his life to making money by lying with every breath that he could muster to keeping murders and rapists on the streets! A woman so ugly on the inside that she couldn't barely go on living if she couldn't be beautiful on the outside. A drug dealer, a drug dealing pederast actually. And let's not forget the desease spreading hore. Only in the world of this shity could you even try to say these were inoscent people and keep a straight face. But that's the point, we see a deadly sin on every street corner, in every home, and we tolerate it. We tolerate it because it's common, it's trivial. We tolerate it morning noon to night. Well, not any more. I'm setting the example. And what I've done is gonna be puzzled over and studdied and followed forever."
Today's world is not the time of the Round Table anymore. People are chasing things that don't really matters: money, villa, car, beauty, fame... They do this only beause other people are doing the same thing and by winning those things they can be labeled as success. Something we know it is wrong, but we still do it without hesitation, why? Because it is common. Fuck your buddy. Cheat on your wife. Call your mother on Mother's Day. Kiss your boss' ass which you want to kick. It's all shit! Conscience is dead. I believe in most part of what John Doe said, only couldn't really agree with what he did, because you cann't take away otherbody's life in the Lord's name.
I still want to quote this movie's last line to conclude all I want to express:" Ernest Hemingway once wrote:' The world is a fine place and worth fighting for.' I agree with the second part."

Seven Nights

    English:
Final exams of this semester drag my ass a lot from continuing my personal introduction to best scary movies. But after all, they are all finished now, so I guess I will have plenty of time to do my job. Hah!
I gotta say Seven Nights is without doubt the best domestic scary movie I've ever seen. Rarely in a domestic scary movie, do I see such a fantanstic story and gripping atmosphere. Black cat, old mansion, family hall for worshipping Buddham, mirror, and female ghost, all these elements are elaborately combined. And it is much more than just a ghost movie. As a matter of fact, it is a suspense movie so scary beyond all reason. In the end, you'll find out it even has nothing to do with ghosts.
The heroine played by JiangQinqin was on the most thrilling honeymoon in this world with her husband. For seven nights, she has to confront with trange things in her new home alone: female's crying in midnight, long-haired ghost in the mirror, red-dressed doll in the basin...What are all these things about? Are they connected? Or it's just the heroine's hallucination? Go and watch the movie to find out the season.

    致命ID Identity

    English:
Today I want to talk aoubt Identity, one of the best suspense scary movies in my view.
A dark rainy night, in the middle of no where, eleven different strangers gathered in a motel, because the storm made the road flooded. And just like other suspense scary movies, phones, cell phones, all communication tools just didn't work all of a sudden. These eleven diffent people have their own different identies. They are one actress, the actress' driver, the motel's manager, a hooker, a young couple, a police and a convict under his escort, a family, who are a couple and their child. And while they were stuck at the motel, they began to be killed one by one right after the convict's escape.
At this point, I have to say that serial killer is not a very new concept in the scary movie's field. But this movie is not just a usual serial killing story you can imagine. The best part of Identity is that everybody in this story has a skeleton in his closet, which give the audience and other characters in this movie some good reason to suppose him as the killer. The multiplicity of its incidents make the plot very very complicated. Not untill the last second, believe me, you can never figured out who is the real killer!
This movie was very sucessful in the movie publishing history. Without famous film star, without big investment, it reached the top of the USA box office just by its fantastic story plot!

Ghost Ship

Here is the first scary movie I'd like to introduce you to: "Ghost Ship". It is not because it's the best; it is because I think it's good. Notice that there is no ranking priority in my movie list.
I have to addmit that it really gave me a hard time to try to describe the plot. I was rooting aroud among web sites, dictionaries, and finally I got this, the origial post's introduction:
The salvage crew aboard the tugboat Arctic Warrior is the best in the business. Under the leadership of their Captain, Sean Murphy, and with the expertise of salvage team leader Maureen Epps, they can locate any abandoned vessel, patch it up until its seaworthy, and drag it back to shore for a price. Canadian Air Force pilot Jack Ferriman recruits the team to investigate a mysterious vessel he has spotted floating adrift off the coast of Alaska in a remote region of the Bering Sea. The team discovers the remains of the fabled Antonia Graza--thought to be lost at sea for more than 40 years. It's a hell of a find--the salvage rights alone could be worth a fortune. And by the law of the sea, any vessel discovered on international waters can be claimed by whomever is fortunate enough to find it--and skilled enough to haul it back to port. But once onboard the eerie, cavernous ship, the crew of the Arctic Warrior discovers that the decaying vessel is anything but deserted. It's home to something more deadly and horrific than anything they've encountered in all their years at sea. Now the crew must uncover the truth about the ship's past and unlock the mystery that threatens their very survival.
And I still put my unfinished work below to make a comparison:
At the very beginning of the movie, there was a luxury liner named Antonia travelling in the middle of the ocean. And passengers on this line were indulging themselves in a ball with a blond beauty singing on the stage. But at the very next moment, a horrible scenario happened, that all of the people in this ball were suddently cut by the waist by a moving wire. You can hardly imagine how bloody that was. It became a pandemonium. Only a girl in a white skirt survived, because she was too short to be cut by the wire. And she started screaming...
Several years later, Jack, a young pilot, casually came across a liner randomly floating in the Bering Strait, and he wanted to find out the secret of this ship, whose name is exactly Antonia. So he hired a very excellent salvage team, the crew of which are captain Murphy, the only femal Aps (I don't know if I spell the name the right way, because the lyric of this movie is Chinese), and 3 others.
Because I suddenly found something far better, so I don't have enough impetus to finish my job anymore. Maybe you should go and watch this movie yourself to complete the story.
This movie is considered by many people as lack of horror factors, which means it is not frightening enough. But as a story, I still think it is a thing of beauty: terrefic scianrio in the beginning, full of suspenses in the middle, big surprise in the end. And you can tell these actors really identified with the characters when they were playing. Someone on the Internet commented on the first five minutes of this moive this way:
"The first five minutes, on the other hand, are a brilliant display of fine film making and should be an inspiration for other directors. "
BTW: found this movie's complete English script by accident, in case someone are interested:
